Panic Room

back.png

When feeling overwhelmed at a party, Blaire escapes to the bathroom and attempts to pull herself together.

When coming up with the visual language for this film, the main theme or emotion I wanted to portray was that immense anxiety the main character would be feeling to the audience. I began with doodling this noodle-y, sporadic character design and decorated her with these bright, intense colors. She has an edginess to her, a sharpness and urgency in her design, but also a goofiness that I find sympathetic.

I wanted to pair that over-the-top cartoon-y look with a semi-realistic background so she felt a bit out of place against her environment, though I went for a more hand-painted texture for the backgrounds so it blended nicely with the hand-drawn animation and the visual style could remain somewhat cohesive. I wanted the bathroom to feel grimy and gross and probably not the most comfortable space to be in, but then contrast it with that playful, spacey dream world.
